Waypoint Centre for Mental Health

Client: Design Build Finance Maintain (DBFM)for Province of Ontario by Integrated Team Solutions
Location: Penetanguishene, Ontario

This new 350,000 square foot mental health facility provides a safe and secure environment for patients needing mental health treatment. It replaced the existing 160-bed Oak Ridge Facility and the 20-bed Brebeuf Facility to consolidate Waypoint Centre into a more efficient, integrated building complex.

The facility, consisting of five buildings tied together into one structure, features long span structural steel trusses and full height interior light wells to maximize light penetration to the patient and support areas. An existing bridge abutment was incorporated into the design, eliminating the need to shore the entire structure and allowing for an existing access road to be maintained.

Through careful and economical design, the use of steel was minimized, reducing costs and streamlining the construction process. Building Information Modeling (BIM) was used by all team members allowing for accurate testing of design models and the early detection of problems. As the building nears completion of construction, it is ahead of schedule and on budget.

The Waypoint Centre is designed as a post disaster facility with a design life of 100+ years. The facility is targeting LEED Silver Certification.
